Board Member Certification

Boards play a critical role in moving cities and organizations forward. The most effective boards acquire members who understand their role and duties, are actively engaged in the work of governance, and accept accountability for the position they have been given.

A board culture of cohesiveness, teamwork, dedication to self-education, and a passion for performance improvement and excellence will help motivate and sustain the organization it serves. But often, the most willing and able individuals are not aware of all that board membership and participation encompasses.

The Leadership Institute at Columbus State University offers a Board Member Certification program for members and prospective members of all types of boards, including but not limited to autonomous, quasi-judicial, administrative, policy making, advisory and legislative boards.

The Certification is available to all interested individuals, regardless of current board member status:
  • Those not currently involved in board service, but who seek certification status in order to improve eligibility and identify themselves as candidates for board membership
  • Newly appointed and current board members who wish to be exposed to professional development topics that increase their level of skills and awareness, and therefore effectiveness as a board member
Certification training goes beyond typical board orientations which address organization-specific history, mission, vision, strategy, staff, initiatives, and the like. Rather, it focuses on professional development topics which universally benefit those appointed/invited to serve on boards - regardless of the specific board to which an individual is appointed.

Certification is awarded through The Leadership Institute at Columbus State University and its affiliation with the University System of Georgia. It is a portable certification, held by the individual, and carries .4 Continuing Education Units (CEU).
